Welcome to Southwest Iowa Cattle Feeders. We’re Rich and Ann Cody, operators of Iowa’s #1 “hands-on” custom cattle feeding facility. Southwest Iowa Cattle Feeders (formerly Cody Feedlot) was recently formed by fourteen former customer-feeders. We have recently updated our facilities to bring them up to and beyond modern industry standards. We think the best way to introduce ourselves is to answer questions you might ask if you were here visiting. (By the way, you are welcome to tour our operation anytime!)
Q. Why

Q. Are you large enough to
handle my needs?
A. We currently have a one-time
capacity of 4000 head, with plans to expand rapidly!

Q. Profit margins have been
small lately with the high price of feeders. Do you have good
relationships with packers and bankers?
A. YES! Three things give you a
competitive advantage feeding here……..1) We offer feed financing as well
as partnering 2) Our hands-on management style allows us to charge the
lowest yardage fees in the industry 3) Most cattle are sold “on the grid.”

Q. Do you have a solid track
record of producing great rate-of-gains?
A. Over the past five years we have
produced a rolling herd average of 3.5 lbs. per day feeding yearlings.

Q. Why do you call yourself
a “hands-on” operation?
A. Because I personally feed all
cattle myself twice daily. This allows me to optimize rations as well as
spot problems early. By maintaining a small yet professional staff, I’m
able to keep costs down and perfomance high!
Q. You say you specialize in
retained-ownership cattle. What do you mean?
A. We believe more and more cow-calf
operators will turn to us to feed their calves. Why? Eventually, packers
will dictate the kind of cattle bred and fed, just as they have done in
the hog industry. Identifying which of your cows produces high quality
finished cattle will become critical! Also, many cow-calf operators simply
wont have the resources necessary to maintain a small feedlot that
complies with EPA regulations (Ours does!)
